FIX FOR UPGRADING AND NEW ISO 2008.1

Postby don_crissti » Mon Apr 14, 2008 11:23 pm

1. If you want to do a clean install use the new iso (read further slick50's post for instructions on certain hardware):
Removed

2. If you have any Gnome version but never upgraded from PASS or testing use the two RPMs:
Download these two files:
Removed

3. If you have upgraded from PASS or testing do what vampirefo1 has been told to do to fix his system... or do a clean install.

Yes, I know this thread is a mess but it is supposed to fix a mess so that's why it looks like this...

Hi don_crissti

I'll help test the fix. I'm running PCLOS Gnome 2008.1, does that make a difference?

All the best

OK, thanks !

Download these two files:
Removed

and then as root go to where you downloaded them and do the following:
rpm -Uvh pclos-gnome-gfxboot-theme-0.3-2pclos2007.i586.rpm
and
rpm -Uvh --force pclos-gnome-theme-1.1.7-15pclos2007.noarch.rpm

Reboot your machine and then open Synaptic and mark all upgrades. Then apply (install them all). Reboot again. See if it works for you (bootsplash present, PCC working etc). Then make a remaster and see if it installs OK(particularly at installing GRUB screen !) See if the remaster works too (bootsplash present, PCC working etc). Let us know first if the regular way works for you guys.

You can go further with the testing if you want to test also upgrading from the testing REPO. You can enable testing in Synaptic, upgrade first your kernel to 2.6.24 > reboot and check with uname -r to see if it's loaded and then mark all upgrades from testing and install. Reboot and try to make a remaster and see if that works.
If you have any questions please do ask.

Thank you !

Thanks Tony !

We might still work on those as after further talking to slick50 apparently they could be improved depending on your feedback also. It is very important to see if this allows for upgrading > resulting in a crash-free install. We also test stuff on our own so the more feedback we get the better we can tweak it.

Anyone with the prior pclos-gnome-2.21 install and the few that downloaded the prior pclos-gnome2008.1
should be fine with the upgrade and the fix from the above post allows those to remaster without breaking.

What we have to do is do a work around for the pclos-gnome2008 and the pclos-gnome2008-cf
These are the ones that are crucial to us now. This will be fixed soon.

We do have a new pclos-gnome2008.1 that ones can download if you want to test.
This one should remaster fine as it has been fixed.
Some newer hardware we tested is having boot issues with it.
If you have a scsi cdrom drive (sr0) and have problems booting this cd.
You will have to add this to boot menu. all-generic-ide and also after install.
Most of you should not have a problem.

Don_C
Have PCLOS gnome 2008 running (kernel 2.6.22.15tex3 / gnome 2.21.2) on a seperate 10Gib partition so perfomed test as asked, no problems I can see sofar. Splashscreen and PCC OK !
Download these two files:

Removed

and then as root go to where you downloaded them and do the following:
Quote:
rpm -Uvh pclos-gnome-gfxboot-theme-0.3-2pclos2007.i586.rpm
and
Quote:
rpm -Uvh --force pclos-gnome-theme-1.1.7-15pclos2007.noarch.rpm

Reboot your machine and then open Synaptic and mark all upgrades. Then apply (install them all). Reboot again. See if it works for you (bootsplash present, PCC working etc). Have created and the run remastered LiveCD.iso on Virtualbox proceded install to Virtual HDD and rebooted.
Seems to be all there. Bootsplash & PCC seem fine. When starting Synaptic get message that a problem was found:

W: There are multiple versions of "memtest86+"in your system.

This package won't be cleanly updated, unless you leave
only one version. To leave multiple versions installed,
you may remove that warning by setting the following
option in your configuration file:

RPM::Allow-Duplicated { "^memtest86+$"; };

To disable these warnings copletely set:

RPM::Allow-Duplicated-Warning false";

Don't know if relevant ?

If you could tell us on what version of PCLOS Gnome is that happening and if you have installed anything from PASS or testing prior to install those two rpms.

Thanks !

Thanks for the info vampirefo1 !

I think ldetect is the reason why you cannot install the rpms. If you look at the errors starting from the end each one errors because it has a call (reference > 'use') to the prior. In fact you get only one error as the others are merely subsequent calls. And that one is related to ldetect or libldetect or something that is dependent on those two IMO. I'm not sure which of the packages you have installed from PASS produced that.
I can suggest a more radical approach for your particular case but you must know there are chances to screw it totally. In that case you will have to use the new ISO and do a clean install.
I'm not advising to anyone else who doesn't get your problem there, as it is brain surgery performed with an axe.
Let me know if you want to try it. But I must repeat you can end up with a total mess.

I am ready to try, this is a test machine, I could just reinstall root from livecd, but I like to test stuff.
no big deal if this gets trashed.

going out for a bit will be back and try what you post.

give me a chance to try a program I wrote called Gpackage.

Sure, no problem.

Here is what I suggest:
I have tried this a couple of days ago on my machine as I too have upgraded from testing and could not find a way to fix my install... It worked for me but no guarantee it will work for you too.
So here we go:
1. Open Synaptic, reload. Don't close it.

2. Open a terminal and run (there are six packages you will forcefully remove and the instruction is a single line, make sure you remove them all 6):
rpm -e --nodeps drakxtools drakx-finish-install drakxtools-backend drakxtools-newt harddrake harddrake-ui
you will get some sort of warnings about saving /etc/sysconfig/*** stuff etc...

3. Now look for those packages you just removed, in Synaptic - you'll see them in red - as broken (some or all...) but just mark them all for upgrade. Make sure all of them are marked !

So these are what you must install from Synaptic, don't miss any of them:

drakxtools
drakx-finish-install
drakxtools-backend
drakxtools-newt
harddrake
harddrake-ui

Agree, apply then always with Synaptic open

4. Try to install the two rpms posted here

reload Synaptic and then mark all upgrades for install (read 5). Apply. Make sure you also have remasterme also installed. Restart your system. It is possible you will get that wizard from the LIVECD only this time with a EULA from PCLOS. (Not sure if this is normal, but that's not the point). Just re-enter the required info (if you have a user already it will know about it...)

5. You probably know that some stuff from testing (squashfs) requires kernel 2.6.24 so if you fully upgrade the whole stuff from testing you will need that kernel I think. But should go with the regular and PASS.

6. Let me know if this has any outcome. And thanks for testing !
