small problem

Postby paul928 » Thu Apr 24, 2008 3:07 am

The only problem that I have now is that when I try and download epiphany browser from synaptic I get:

"The following packages have unresolved dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences."

Then it has:

epiphany:
Depends: mozilla-firefox (= 2.0.0.12)

Other than that I've installed all the packages that I need at the moment.

Tony,

You can try 2.8.2 from the testing but first uninstall the old ones there. The testing 2.8.2 should work provided you clean the area before doing that.

Folks,

I've lost track about what to do, somewhere in this thread - I think it's got a bit confusing.

Is there any chance that a simple set of instructions for what everyone needs to do can be written and posted in a separate thread. Would be useful to have instructions like this:
1. If you have installed from the Gnome 2008 iso original version issued a couple of months ago, do this:
xxxxxx
2. If you downloaded the updated iso last week, do this:
xxxxxxxx
3. If you are still using gnome 2007 or Gnome 2007 lite with all upgrades, do this:
xxxxxxx
3. If you did any of the above but your system still appears to be working fine, there is still a risk that...xxxxxx....will happen, so do this:
xxxxxxx

Apologies if I'm being a bit dim but this thread has got so many questions and answers I can't work out what I should do and what the implications of not doing it are.

Thanks.

It's done in the first post of the thread. For anything unclear please ask.

Downloaded those two rpm files, and ran those commands in a root terminal.

So basically, if I downloaded 2008.1, I'm all set and don't have to do any modifications? :D

Good to hear.

IF you downloaded THIS 2008.1 not the one that has been up a week or so ago and later withdrew.

tsupersonic
if you had already installed the new 2008.1 there was no need to upgrade those two rpms... I don't know what to say there.

@don - I installed 2008 (not 2008.1) a week or two back. I just typed those two commands in and got those.

Additionally, the bootloader not being found was due to the mishap I had with the PCLOS installer's partition tool, which wiped out my Windows drive, so I had to reinstall Windows XP. That replaced Grub, and I had to make Grub the boot manager again. :?:

I might just reinstall everything when XP SP3 comes out. Still deciding on that.

Hey, depending upon what you use Windoze for, why not do a fresh 2008.1 install and then install VBox or VMWare and run XP as a virtual machine. I do this as I use windoze to rip and burn DVDs for backups as there is much easier windoze products from Slyfox for this operation than linux.

An advantage of this ALSO is that you are protected from viruses and mal-ware as Linux is connected to the www not windoze

Running Windows in a virtual machine is not an option for me. I play some games, and I have some applications that are specific to Windows.

Please don't use the excuse of malware to make me to switch to Linux. I've used Windows since v3.1, and ever since then, I have never had problems with malware or any problems in general with Windows. I don't know if I can say the same thing for Linux.

I am pretty new to the Linux world, just want to experiment with it. So far, it's been an alright experience, but there's been many hiccups here and there.

As you say Linux or VMWare is not for everyone. Dual boot with XP and 2008.1 sounds the way to go for you then? I used to use dual boot with no hiccoughs, XP loaded first and then 2008.1 will allow you to run both side by side with no issues. You could run 2008.1 in a virtual box on an XP host!

 It just doesn't feel the same in a virtual machine. I like compiz-fuzion, and it's pretty slow in a vm. Maybe if I didn't play games or use applications that are specific to Windows, I would probably use Linux all the time. :)
