OGMRip DVD Encoder [updated]

Postby sarcastic_bastard » Wed Apr 23, 2008 10:04 pm

I saw this posted on the other forum while having a look, and followed the link supplied http://ogmrip.sourceforge.net/en/index.html , it's nifty and simple Gnome app for ripping and converting DVD to video format, at any selected size. Selects good defaults, and doesn't overwhelm you with options like some of the others in the repo. I loaded another distro I have laying around, BLAG, on a spare machine, and checked, as I was sure I saw it listed once. It does, so I loaded it and gave it a try. Very easy to use, and I really think this would be good if it were to be made available. Hope I'm not asking too much, but as it's a Gnome app, figured I might have a chance.

From the link:

OGMRip is an application and a set of libraries for ripping and encoding DVD into AVI, OGM, MP4, or Matroska files using a wide variety of codecs. It relies on mplayer, mencoder, ogmtools, mkvtoolnix, oggenc, lame, and faac to perform its tasks.

The GUI features a clean HIG-compliant GNOME 2 interface and tries to minimize as much as possible esoteric settings.

A CLI client is also available, it's called shRip.
Features

* transcodes from DVD or files
* outputs OGM, AVI, MP4, or Matroska files
* supports a lot of codecs (Vorbis, MP3, PCM, AC3, DTS, AAC, XviD, LAVC, X264, Theora)
* calculates video bitrate for a given file size
* autodetects cropping parameters and scaling factors
* supports multiple audio and subtitles streams encoding
* extracts subtitles in SRT or VobSub format
* uses maximum quality codecs switches
* rips contiguous chapters
* supports external audio (PCM, MP3, AC3, DTS, AAC, Vorbis) and subtitle (MicroDVD, SubRip, SRT, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, PJS, MPSub, AQT, JacoSub, VobSub) files

Anyway, please have a look, and tell us if this is possible. Thanks in advance. :)

This is not the latest build but a upgrade from what we had.
We still have to upgrade some more dependencies to build the latest one.

These are still untested.

[root@localhost Downloads]# rpm -i ogmrip-0.10.3-1pclos2007.i586.rpm
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/bin/ogmrip;4812cb1c: cpio: read

:(

Other package appeared to install fine.

Ok, have tried downloading both files several times, but one or the other always seemed to corrupt. Finally tried again tonight, and was successful. Installed, and added entry to menu with menu-editor. Seems to run ok, will do some DVD backups later. Cheers. :)

Let me know how it works sb, this one I'm interested in also.
I like to rip just the movie off my dvds and put them on my network. I do this mainly for my daughter, you'd be surprised what a 3 year old can do to a dvd, and I got tired of replacing them,, LOL

mrZoSo, I've already tried this one on another distro i tried, called BLAG, and used it to create backup files of my 2 Carl Barron DVD's (hilarious Aussie comic, observational humour at it's best:), and the defaults worked fine, and the resulting file, at only 688MB, looks flawless. I ripped it to OGM, and it's brilliant. You can't see any degradation or loss, and it looks and sounds brilliant. :)

This app was one of the few things I was missing with us, and now it's here, i finally feel complete. Well, at least until I find something else to b*tch about. :P

Hmm, just been checking the website while reading up on this again, seems to mentiona few features/options we don't seem to have in our version, assuming it's due to them updating on their end. Any chance of getting an update too? I'm happy with what is at hand, but would really like a look at some of the updated features. :)

I just built this one if you want to test this...
It is the latest as I had to build dependencies we don't have as of yet.

Works like a charm, just needed to install ogmtools, and theora-tools. Few more optioons available, a little more up to date. Great work, thanks. :)

I use this to rip all my DVD's to drive, saves digging them out to watch.
