Hi Don, well maybe I haven't been as clear as I'm asking others to be. My inexperience shows here because it's mostly me calling things by inaccurate names.
I am advocating something pretty Distro-Specific here and one of the guys made a good point that it may just require 2 or 3 more entries into the FAQ. Being Distro specific in a couple of areas would do a lot to dispel a beginner's confusion. I am merely championing for a little more focus here in the area for beginners in a community that is already head and shoulders above the rest.
And sure Linux takes work and some study, but you don't throw a baby into a pool for their first swim either (well,...some cultures do maybe but who knows). My point is this: Mix a wealth of information online with a wealth of distros and you can get one confused beginner. Ok here goes:
1) 'root command' was a misnomer. My Bad, but my point still stands. To get root privileges requires different words in different distros: su, sudo, sudo gedit, gksu gedit, sudo nautilus, kdesu konqueror etc.... And yes, granted, there are links and good tutorials you can give to the beginner - But why not put this in the FAQ so that it can offer distro-specific examples etc? It would cut down immensely on beginners' posts. (If it's already there, my apologies. I have looked and I didn't see it)
2) Installing programs is different in different distros:
Pardon this reference, but 'sudo apt-get install' is very different from 'su -ivh filename.rpm' (I might have even gotten that wrong). Putting this in FAQ will also help folks new to this distro.
3) Getting the right file location or directory in the terminal is key if you're trying to install a program you've downloaded. If the person downloaded the file to their desktop, they need to do 'cd Desktop' to get the directory pointed right to install their file. How many times has a beginner run 'su -ivh filename.rpm' without pointing to the right place (directory) where the file is and posted a question asking, 'Why won't this install?'
Again, pardon my inexperience. I may be using the term 'directory' incorrectly here.
Some of these things may seem obvious to some but they weren't for me, at least as a beginner. I think that these few things will help beginners more than some realize.
Well, I hope I've been clear without being abrupt. I think focus for the beginner's sake is what I'm really talking about. I think these are obvious things that should be in the FAQ, but maybe not.
Many Thanks for your feedback,...Frank B.
