Nvidia GeForce 5300, Kernel module

Postby alapelli » Fri Aug 07, 2009 6:48 pm

I am trying to activate Compiz, realized at one point that had to dowlowd drivers from Synaptic, however the reference is as follow: nvidia_180.xx package or others different numbers. How could I find those numbers? Nothing written on the box. On the PC Linux control Center under Hardware, Video Card the information that I get is:
Identification
Vendor: ‎nVidia Corporation
Description: ‎NV37GL [Quadro FX 330/GeForce PCX 5300]
Media class: ‎VGA compatible controller
Connection
Bus: ‎PCI
PCI domain: ‎0
Bus PCI #: ‎1
PCI device #: ‎0
PCI function #: ‎0
Vendor ID: ‎0x10de
Device ID: ‎0x00fc
Sub vendor ID: ‎0x1462
Sub device ID: ‎0x9680
Misc
Module: ‎Card:NVIDIA GeForce FX series
But no indication of something that would indicate the Package number. Therefore don't know which nVidia Kernel module to install.
Any help on the Kernell module, would be appreciated, but even better how to find this package number, should I had to do search in the future.
Thanks

Welcome alapelli,

Start up synaptic and search for nvidia_180.xx and install.

Sorry I do not know a lot about Compiz..

Others will check in and maybe be able to provide additional INFO..

Hi Grump,
Thanks for taking time to reply. Regarding Compiz, you need a Video Card who's more advanced than most On-Board cards,(with more graphic capacity) I have tried Compiz once, on Ubuntu and it was cool. Now that I am using PC Linux O.S. would like to continue using it (and learn about all his capacities) but before that must activate the Video Card to give me the graphic environment. Therefore my question on which set of Drivers to activate in order to make my graphic card fully operational.

nvidia_173.xx
Use this NVIDIA driver for these products:
- GeForce FX series cards
- Quadro FX series cards

dkms-nvidia173
NVIDIA kernel module for GeForceFX and newer NVIDIA GPUs.
This is to be used with the nvidia_173.xx package.

Thanks Slick 50, was reading packages numbers as stated above, without really paying attention to description. Have installed nVidia driver and now Compiz working A-1!
