Graphics Card Driver Help

Postby Lazy-buntu » Wed Apr 16, 2008 4:04 pm

Hey, I was working on dual booting my HP laptop with Windows Vista and Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), but after meddling with the wireless for far too long, I decided to try out PCLOS Gnome 2008.

[I did end up getting the wireless working in Ubuntu, but there was difficulty connecting to a network--I couldn't resolve an IP address even if I set it up statically. And then after trying to backup my computer before attempting to install nvidia drivers, I went to restore and ended up with a worse problem than before lol.]

Anyway, I am acquainting myself to PCLOS somewhat, but I wanted to absolutely make sure that I installed my graphics card drivers correctly the first time (to avoid a repeat of Ubuntu). I searched the forums, but I did not find a guide type post. They were all multi paged threads of someone with a problem, that got fixed one way or another.

My graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GO 6150 (256MB shared RAM)

I want to get working on my 3D desktop effects, so if anyone could let me know which of the drivers to install for this graphics card it would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not an expert but I think the best option is to go to the Nvidia website and use thier linux drivers. The graphics card will work 100% better.

The recognized recommendation is to use Synaptic and search for the driver (search for nvidia). I think this one would be nvidia 100.x.xx and you'd probably get 2 or 3 files in the package. I've seen a recommendation for 100.10.xx for that card but in the repos you'll find 100.14.xx, I think. Give it a try and it should allow turning on the c-f features.

Yes, as azziam said, we do recommend using Synaptic to install the driver for your video card. Every driver has a description and is suitable for a certain generation/model of vga. Just pick the right one for you and install.

Core Temp

Postby Lazy-buntu » Thu Apr 17, 2008 3:34 pm

What is the average Core Temperature for a laptop?

I'm looking in the Nvidia settings now that the drivers are installed and I found a temperature monitor.

Right now with nothing really running I'm at 66C, which is the top of the green level. It seems like the heat coming out the back of the laptop is slightly warmer too.
