Xorg changed resolutions after enabling 3d??? [SOLVED]

Postby Matt_Maguire » Thu Apr 19, 2012 7:41 pm

I installed a Galaxy GT240 nvidia card and on boot I saw composting was gone so I enabled it in PCC and rebooted to find my resolution changed???

The monitor is an Envision EN7410e that supports 1280x1024 but now PCC only allows up to 1024x768. I checked xorg.conf and sure enough it thinks the monitor is generic and the xorg.conf.bak has the the correct monitor and resolution selections. WHAT the...???

I suspect I'll just have to edit xorg as root, or will another shot trying xfdrake maybe work. I've never used xfdrake from runlevel 3.

Thanks in advance
Matt

For the resolution thing open PCC->hardware->configure your video card->monitor and expand generic. Try the 1280x1024 @ 60hz one.

xfdrake does the same as configure you video card in PCC, but it's a little harder to use.
Better would be nvidia-xconfig. That will let nvidia produce a new xorg.conf for you.

Time for 20 questions:
Which x11-driver-video- do you have? 96xx, 173, or current.
Is task-3ddesktop installed?
Are you using Zen or Gnome?

Thanks ongoto! I restarted this AM and got the resolution changed by doing what you said, (I didn't think of ticking the monitor tab last night to expand it...). I just ticked the resolution tab.

I logged back in to mark it solved and saw your post! To answer your 20 questions I'm running gnome on this box "MMXII" and am getting it ready to loan it to someone to try linux! It's a newly built spare 6 core!

The X11 driver is 290.10-1pclos2 and the open source drivers are also installed??? Going to have to look at that... Hardware accel is a yes, 3ddesktop is a yes. :D

So resolution is now good and effects all good now!

Something else though, I installed the catalyst control center on gnome, but it goes away after I give the password?? I think Dragynn has addressed this but I'll have to search some at another time. (EDIT), upon review of what I posted I HAVE NVIDIA... gonna uninstall CCC .

Anyway thanks for the quick reply!
Matt

PS just stuck an HIS silent radeonHD6670 in another box running ZEN (11.7 ver I think?) and it was silky smooth and CCC had already been installed and working and still worked. Pretty big bump from the onboard HD4250 chip.
