Aloha everyone;

I have a slight problem with my mouse pointer resizing itself in different applications. It resizes to a smaller size when I move it from any Java program such as Thinkorswim, Oanda, or VLC media player back to the Gnome/GTK portions. When the mouse is in these programs it is small, but when I move it to the title bar or Maximize/Minimize/Close buttons it enlarges itself.

I use the awesome Wonderland mouse pointer but I move the slider all the way to the right to increase the size of it. My laptop computer is:

Dell Inspiron E1505, (3 years old)
display is at 1680x1050 (native resolution) using an Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 with 256 MB memory with the latest 256.53 driver.

I don't use 3D effects or Compiz. I save all my video memory to run my Forex charts.

I noticed that since my native resolution is so high on a 15.4" screen that the Wonderland mouse in its "default" size is really small. That is why I enlarge it. But I would like it to stay enlarged across different applications. It only resizes itself in non Gnome applications. Funny thing is that it stays big in Firefox and Google Chromium. It only resizes smaller in Java apps and VLC or other non native Gnome apps.

Once again thanks for an awesome distro and I sure would appreciate any help on this matter.

Sorry, I've never experienced what you describe, so have no idea what to suggest, and I would assume it's same for most others, never seen anyone complain of this before, so likely none have any experience with it. Sorry, I really have no idea what to suggest.

If you have some KDE apps installed go to Applications > More Applications > Configuration > Configure Your Desktop. This is the KDE desktop system settings dialog. If it's not there then install kdebase4-workspace-core via Synaptic.

In the KDE system settings dialog you can configure a cursor theme (Hardware > Mouse > Cursor Theme) which should then work in the apps you mention, though I'm not too sure about the java apps.

The only trouble is you may not be able to use the Wonderland Large cursor theme so you'll probably have to choose something like a Large Oxygen cursor theme and then set up a similar theme for your Gnome desktop and apps.

Yeah, I rarely bother messing with themes/icons/mouse-pointer settings (unless I'm REALLY bored), so not much prac, but the above sounds like a good suggestion.

The problem is only noticeable when you want a large cursor... your Gnome apps and desktop get the large cursor but any kde apps or VLC or Opera etc etc get stuck with the default small cursor unless you fiddle about as per my suggestions above.

Thanks for your suggestion but I don't see why I should need to install a bunch of KDE stuff just to get my mouse pointer working correctly. I will try that as a last resort though.

Like I mentioned earlier, the mouse pointer only resizes from large to small (default) when I move it from the Gnome apps to the non Gnome apps. From my research it seems to me that it is a Metacity problem. Maybe, maybe not, I am just guessing.

This issue is very important to me because it could cost me money. When I move the mouse pointer into non native Gnome apps (like my trading software) it is way too small and I have to look really hard to find it. Plus, since my trading involves using real money I do not want my mouse to be hard to see.

Is there any way I can change the size of the default mouse pointer to much bigger? Maybe as big as the largest slider scale size? That way I would not have to resize it at all. Is there not a configuration file that I can change? There must be a way to set default mouse pointer size or am I wrong?

Once again thanks for the previous suggestion but I want to see if I can fix this the "Gnome" way first before I start installing a bunch of KDE files.

Running non Gnome apps in a Gnome desktop will throw up these theme quirks.

For example VLC uses the QT interface and not Gtk. Metacity draws the window frame and titlebar so you'll probably find you have a large cursor when you hover on the titlebar but as soon as you move into the app window, QT takes over and gives you the QT mouse cursor theme.

I suggested the KDE stuff because it lets you choose a mouse cursor theme for your QT and other apps.

Change the line Inherits=wonderland to any suitable theme in the /usr/share/icons folder.

There isn't a system wide wonderland large theme so unless you can create one yourself you'll have to look to installing one of the ready-made large cursor themes such as Oxygen.

So, if I install the "task-kde" from Synaptic will I be able to use these large Oxygen mouse pointers that you are talking about? Will the large mouse pointers show up in my mouse pointer selections when I go to customize my current theme? I just want to make sure before I start installing a bunch of KDE files.

I really appreciate all your help Knome. I will try your suggestions. But, if there is anyone else out there that may have another purely "Gnome" suggestion please let me know.

Wow man it worked! I installed the kdebase4-workspace-cursor-themes file from Synaptic and then edited my default theme file to read Inherits = Oxygen_Zion_Big and wallah I now have a big cursor in all my trading apps even my Java based Oanda trading software. Thanks a million dude. You are righteous. I owe you a beer.

It would be cool if I could do this with the Wonderland cursor. I really like that cursor. Anybody know how to make the Wonderland cursor big by default? Oh well, for now I am happy though. Thanks again Knome.
