Help getting your audio device working

Sound is "lower" than expected. {SOLVED]

Postby sarcastic_bastard » Tue Apr 26, 2011 10:04 am

Hi peoples. :)

I'd kinds assumed that the onboard sound of this particular box was the culprit, have to turn sound right up to get anything half-decent, but a recent install of Linux Mint 10 on the same machine gave a much greater, clearer sound, at lower "volume" level, than the PCLOS install at full volume. This is annoying, and more than a tad puzzling.

lspci reveals:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

Audio works in both, but is much better in Mint. Tested with Live-cds, then with full installs. Sound is def much "Weaker" in PCLOS, at least for this box. And no, can't add sound card to it, only PCI slot on box has the wireless card.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions? Surely there is a way to improve this. Help?

SB.....many over at pclos have had this problem after a recent update.....

Try to get the most recent updates - today, reboot , then see if louder...

---If not , ANDY's suggestion worked for me!

Re-installed and played around, finally occured to me that normal sound settings seemed be making no diff, and looking in Sound and Video menu I saw Gmixer, figured have a look. I now feel stupid. One of the levels in it was only part-way up. *sigh* I knew it had to be something simple, I was simply looking in wrong place. :)

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but solution was easy once I quit trying the same things over and over and expecting different results. :)

Sorted, and solved. Cheers. :)
