Toshiba L30 & sound problems [SOLVED]

Postby timcs » Wed Apr 23, 2008 3:21 pm

Hi all

Before deciding to post here, I did a lot of searching on this forum to see if I could solve this matter.

Sadly after reading:

viewtopic.php?t=233&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

http://www.linuxgator.org/forums/viewto ... hiba+sound

viewtopic.php?t=308

viewtopic.php?t=233

viewtopic.php?t=308

and trying these suggestions I have got no where .

I have also read

http://www.linlap.com/wiki/Toshiba+Satellite+L30

and went through the guides but none mentioned PClinuxos.

I have tried other distros but I much prefer PCLos to the others for speed and its a much nicer O/S.

This laptop is my brothers who handed it to me after breaking XP and decided that linux was a better option. Now I cannot get the sound to work so its not looking good.

When the system boots up I get no intro sound and I have tried messing around with preferences->sound and preferences->volume control

One problem I have is that the bios does not seem to have the option of turning off/on fast/quick boot and if I switch off acpi on the boot line command the system does not boot up at all.

I really would appreciate any help here on the matter.

Code: Select all
 cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec:
Have you tried pulseaudio from the repo and see if that will work for you?

apologies for the previous post I forgot to | grep Codec I'm just a little tired at the mo  it also seems that the laptop running pclinuxos will not let me do the | whereas the laptop I am using with xp will.

Run this from the terminal:
Code: Select all
alsaconf

Also check the volume mixer, headphones is not muted also?

You can also try to add
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-digout
to your
/etc/modprobe.conf
and reboot and see if anything happens (you will probably have to tweak your sound levels with alsamixer if this helps... if not remove that line so your /etc/modprobe.conf reverts to original)

You could also try using OSS... I'll read a bit more on that but the above fixed it for many (or so I gather from my searching...)

I have already tried alsaconf oddly enough it finds the soundcard but I still get no sound.

I will try the suggestion with adding options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-digout to /etc/modprobe.conf .

I assume with OSS its a case of downloading its drivers because I tried using it within the Preferences->sound with no luck

Well just try the advices above and if nothing works we'll have a shot at OSS (never had to deal with that myself but unless we try we'll never know right ?)

I think I may reinstall PClinuxos with the image .1 and see what happens first.

Just discovered by reading other posts here that sound has worked through the headphones but not the built in speakers. this is the same for me. I do not have external amplifier on the volume control either.also the volume is really quiet even on max setting

This is really werid.

I have read this post and the one mentioned as part of it :

Small correction.
Code: Select all
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-digout

should be
Code: Select all
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig

You can also try "3stack-dig".

You replied before I edited my post. You should use "3stack-dig" option if you have 3 jacks, and "6stack-dig" if it's 6 jacks.

REMEMBER TO RESTART WHEN YOU MAKE THESE CHANGES.
