I read the threads and I am a little confused as to what happend to the OpenOffice rpm's. Is it because I am doing something wrong when searching or were they moved out of all the repos in sources.list?

It wasn't obvious (or explained very well to you), but I think the last post in that thread directs you to a link that explains how to add the repo's and install. I believe (from scanning this site) that they were removed to update and work on them recently (I was searching for them too, and a number of people are confused). Perhaps there should be a sticky at the top of the forum about Open Office so everyone knows? Admin :?:

Open up synaptic and add this manually or copy & paste:

Add: new
URL: ftp://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/pub/os/Linux/distr/texstar/openoffice/apt/
Distribution: pclinuxos/2009
Section(s): openoffice

Reload & Search: task-openoffice3-en-US

Any customizations you have made will be lost in this update!
In addition if you are German, you would select task-openoffice3-de. French users would select task-openoffice3-fr etc...
Additional Dictionaries available for install via Firefox here:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/dictionary
After installation please disable this repo by putting a # in front of the line above.
#rpm ftp://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/pub/os/Linux/d ... ffice/apt/ pclinuxos/2009 openoffice

I too can't find it using Synaptic on 2009 Gnome. It's installed automatically with the KDE, for some reason.

This gets me a tar-gz: task-openoffice3-en-US

No snide comments, please.

In the other thread that the first message here linked to, I was rather smugly saying, in effect, "Don't be silly, of course Open Office is in the repos." Now I find that, apparently, it was (is?) not. If badmotor's belief is correct, then I fear this is an illustration of why Linux has a slightly Wild West reputation. IMO developers shouldn't remove such major applications like OO from the repos "to work on them". Surely this can be done off-line? It makes those of us who want to promote Linux and PCLOS look foolish and it creates a climate of unreliability, which I would be happy to leave as a heritage for a certain commercially-based OS to preserve.

PBG,

I meant to click on the new tab...

Setting > Repositories > New This will give you a new blank entry.
Add the above in the blank spaces and apply.

So it will look this...

URL: ftp://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/pub/os/Linux/distr/texstar/openoffice/apt/
Distribution: pclinuxos/2009
Section(s): openoffice

I agree wholeheartedly. I like the Wild West comment - I would hope there would be a comment on the website, or an announcement at the top of the forum for such an important package... but nothing. I'm tired of the "you get what you're given, and you are lucky to be using this" approach. Think I'll check out the new Mandriva Gnome, or Ubuntu 9.04 shortly. Mandriva 200.1 RC2 is shaping up well, from what I saw on the live CD.

I'm very sorry about that. We switched from an internal build of Open Office to an external build. The packages were not backward compatible. Also updating would clear out any previous configurations. This is why we did not put the new Open Office in the main repository. We put it in a separate repository which would require the user to read before installing so they would be aware of what was going to happen.

That makes perfect sense, however, as mentioned, it's important to put something like this in the 'Announcements' so everyone is aware.

Meanwhile, please know that all your work and assistance is much appreciated......I'm happy to brag about the great support this distro gets!

What a major mistake!!! This is a major program used by nearly everyone. This should have been brought to our attention immediately.

I followed instructions in this thread, installed OOwriter, calc, base and gnome files so it runs, but it is nowhere to be found on my desktop!

It does not show up in my applications office menu....

hmmmmm HUGE BUMP!

I am really getting frustrated.

I uninstalled what I had, tried re-installing openoffice - task and it still is nowhere in the apps menu.

My system also froze and now I have over 500 broken packages on synaptic.

allstar1960,

I don't know about your situation but I downloaded and tested openoffice before posting this in the forum.
All installed and the applications menus was there and they executed properly...

The only thing that I see was missing was the menu icons were missing. :o
