Totem Sound Problem (Partly Solved)

Postby bilyo » Sun Dec 04, 2011 1:15 pm

Totem appears to be the default DVD player for Gnome. I don't have a frequent need for it but when trying to play a DVD recently, I would get video OK but no sound. I tried a couple of other DVD's with the same result. Is there something missing that I need to load from the repo? My computer does have functioning sound and the volume is turned up.

I tried to install mplayer and got a message that said " libungif.so.4, unresolved dependency". I cant' find this file name anywhere in the repo list. I did find "libungif4.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Several people have had problems with totem. Smplayer would be a good choice.

You might try selecting a different repo in synaptic. There are times when they are not all in sync with the main server. I tried heanet and it showed no dependency errors.

As you suggested, I tried heanet. First, I updated everything and then tried loading mplayer again; same result. Also, tried smplayer and got a message that it was dependent upon mplayer. BTW, I neglected to mention that I know the DVD I'm using is good as I have played it on other systems.

I'm assuming you installed aptupgrade and ran it and rebooted already. I can't think of any other solution. You shouldn't be having any problems installing software, especially mplayer.
Maybe someone smarter than me will jump in here.

Not exactly. I did a complete upgrade using Synaptic and then rebooted. Does aptupgrade do something different?

aptupgrade updates the apt/synaptic package management system...

Yes, it is special. Merely installing it is'nt enough. Look in your Applications/Software Center menu and click aptupgrade. ( if it's there ) Otherwise, install it and then run it. You'll have to reboot after.

The repo has changed somewhat and the old synaptic doesn't work without the upgrade.

I installed aptupgrade, ran it, and then restarted the system. I then updated all aps in synaptic and installed smplayer with no problems or error messages. Smplayer plays the DVD in question with no problem. Thanks for the help on this one.

Totem still has the same "no sound" problem. I reinstalled it but there is no change.

I had the same problem, Totem wouldn't work at all on my machine, old version in the repo, though I saw where Tex had complained about it too. dang shame, Totem supports video thumbnails in Nautilus which is a small, but cool feature.

Well. Nice to know that I'm in good company anyway. I guess I'll just go with smplayer and forget tottem. Smplayer is probably OK for my needs.
Thanks to all for the help.

I suspect Totem is missing some Gstreamer codecs, maybe the so called "Ugly and Bad" plugins, see here under "Codecs" about the middle of the page;

http://projects.gnome.org/totem/

I looked in the repo and there is a cr*p load of Gstreamer plugins there that aren't installed, but none are described as being needed for DVD. Siamer did include the mp3 plugin with his re-master but not the mpeg2 plugin. Maybe that is the problem???

If you check out Gstreamer they admit that the "ugly" plugin could cause problems for distros and by extension individuals due to license violations. The sound codecs are the worst, thanks to the RIAA & other boneheads.

Yeah, it wouldn't even play on my system until I installed gstreamer-plugins-bad, and when it finally worked, the quality was really poor, SMplayer is the best of the pack currently, sucks that all the QT gets dragged in just for the gui though.

gstreamer0.10-a52dec (0.10.18-1pclos2011) worked here.
Poor sound with audio cd, but video is good.
