Help!! Panels have disappeared

Postby satuser083 » Sat Mar 31, 2012 6:51 am

I've just spent the past 2 hours setting up my panels in gnome-mmxii, and suddenly they've disappeared. There were a few problems with setting them up (occasionally the menu-point "Add to Panel" would just disappear, or the box would be empty), but a log-out/log-in always fixed that.

To spare me all that work again, is there any way of restoring them? Alternatively, where are they stored, so that I can perhaps rescue them manually?

Thanks.

Edit: I've just checked in the Configuration Editor (apps -> panel -> objects) and all the objects are still there, but they're not being displayed.

Have just done a fresh installation of mmxii on another partition and, so far anyway, nothing has disappeared. There do seem to be some problems with the panels, however.

For example, if I add an app to a side-panel, then remove it, the Add to Panel item in the right-click menu is greyed out. A logout/login fixes that, but that's never happened before.

Also, I've added a Workspace Switcher (let's call it WS1) to the main (upper) panel (the one in the lower panel (let's call it WS2) is still there). If I alter the Preferences of WS1 to, say, Show all workspaces in: 2 rows, this parameter is also applied to WS2. Don't remember that happening previously :? .

These are not really serious, but my problem is that this is my wife's machine and if this happens when she's using it she starts to panic and moan that linux is rubbish (which we all know is not the case   ).

Interestingly enough, I'm using mmxii on my TP-T42, with absolutely no problems (yet  ) in this area. Maybe it's a hardware problem with my wife's machine ( an Acer Extensa 5620Z).

Anyway, just thought it might be useful to report these points.

What happens if you open a terminal and do this command as normal user?
Note: the trailing ampersand is important.
Code: Select all
gnome-panel --replace &

Are the "add to panel" and other options still greyed out?

No, there's now a full menu; great :D .

Sorry, not so great :( . When I close the terminal, all panels disappear. I can recover them by opening another terminal and repeating the above command, but I can only minimise the terminal now, otherwise the panels disappear again.

Have also just checked by doing a logout/login; if I perform your command the panels are replaced, but killing the terminal causes them to disappear. Sorry about this :( .

It's OK. :)
When you run a command in a terminal without the trailing ampersand &, it causes the behavior you are seeing. The ampersand (preceded by a space) allows the command to run on it's own in the background and free up the terminal.
Try again.

Thanks, but I'm afraid I don't understand :( ; what am I supposed to try again? I've already used your command a number of times, before and following a login, and the result is always the same; the command restores the panels but if I kill the terminal used for the command, they disappear.

:)
You didn't ask for a bash shell tutorial, so I'm not going there. I was curious to see if restarting the panels would clear your problem; and it does. If you log out or reboot you should be good to go.
