Installation Woes - 2 Hard Drives

Postby drjster » Fri May 07, 2010 8:53 am

I tried the PCLinuxOS 2010 Gnome live CD and decided to install it on hard drive 2 which currently is running Ubuntu. The boot drive (we'll call it hard drive 1) is running Windows 7. The bootloader is GRUB 2. Anyway, I started the installer and chose the option to install PCLinuxOS Gnome on the entire hard drive 2, formatting it and the running the installation (no user intervention required). The next message I got was that a reboot was necessary to format the partitions (or something close to that - I don't recall the exact verbiage). I rebooted and the installation did not proceed. Any ideas for getting PCLinuxOS on my hard drive 2 without having to manually configure the partitions? Thanks in advance.

drjster,
Welcome to the forum,
I am assuming you only have one partition on the 2nd drive.

Boot the PCLinuxOS 2010 Gnome in live CD mode.
When you do the install, use the existing partitions , direct the install to the partition on the 2nd drive.

Thanks for your reply. I currently have Ubuntu installed on drive 2 (the drive I want to install PCLinuxOS on) and there are multiple partitions. I'm not sure why choosing the option to replace the entire drive with PCLinuxOS doesn't work.

Hi,

you will most likely find that Ubuntu is using Ext4 and PCLOS wants to install in Ext3 and doesn't recognize Ext4, you need to manually create an Ext3 partition.

The option to format the hard drive and install PCLinuxOS shouldn't care whether it's NTFS or Ext4 or whatever. I've done enough installs that rewrite the entire hard drive to know that the existing file format is irrelevant - it's being blown away/formatted by the installer. It appears that this installer has a bug. Anyway, I've installed the KDE version using the same option and it installed without a hitch.

Glad it is running and if you think there is a bug; please file a report.

I just wanted to point out that the above was true of PCLOS 2009, but not PCLOS 2010. I've installed PCLOS 2010 Gnome on two different machines using ext4 - the one I am currently using being one of them.

@Captain

Good point Captain, didn't even consider that and it wasn't my intention to steer wrong.

Personally I always pre-partition as I want control over the install process (hope that makes sense!).

The way I install on second HD. First, I use partition manager and wipe the second hd partitions. Shut down. Disconnect data cable from first HD(win7). Start live CD and install to hd. After installation, I shut down and reconnect data cable to first HD and disconnect second. Boot win7 and shut down. Connect second HD. At boot F12 to choose which HD I want to boot. It my be a long way, but safe for my win7. I still need the win7 for some appl.
