Is there some command that returns the correct name to be used, or is it just trial and error?

Found the answer this question :

[
Code: Select all
root@localhost user]# wvdialconf wvtest

Found a modem on /dev/ttyUSB0.
Modem configuration written to wvtest.
ttyUSB0<Info>: Speed 9600; init "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"
ttyUSB3<Info>: Speed 9600; init "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"

I did not copy the entire printout- just the last four lines.
Both of the settings will work
Also may require the installation of wvdial if it isn't already installed

It would be nice if there was some command to determine what /dev node to use ....... I suspect there might be ...... so if anyone knows they might post .......

I don't presently have a device to test but wondered if any of the modeswitch options would return the device node .......

Sorry I didn't chime in sooner but I'm having a new dilemma with this since updating to PCL-G 2010. So, I'm connected at the moment using XP till I sort a couple things out (separate thread).

In Gnome PPP there is a Detect button next to the box for the /dev/ttyxxx. You would expect that if that button were "wired" correctly it would be doing just the task you are asking for. I hope to successfully jump through these hoops again ASAP.

Not unless there is something I missed that you can point out .....

That post seems to deal only with regular wi-fi and not USB modem dongles like the A600 and probably others that make calls to cellular networks.

Re: Cricket Broadband A600 For Us? [Solved][Updated for 2010]

Postby azziam » Sat Apr 17, 2010 2:50 pm

In upgrading to 2010 I lost my connection with this device. Sometimes it's hard to tell what is the chicken and what is the egg (what caused what) but if it's any help, here's my experience in getting connected again after a fresh install to PCLOS-GNOME 2010. Of course, until you are somehow connected, you can't visit the repos to see for sure what you have or don't have already onboard [edit - you can use command line to search for apps but I don't do it often enough to be quick at it.]. I thought it was good news when I opened PCC>Network & Internet>Network Center (or Setup New Network interface,etc....) and saw that my device was listed. You would assume if it is seen it could be opened and setup, right? Nope. You'll just see "Unable to open device /dev/ttyACM" [edit - rather, that was my experience]. I tried in terminal as root to run "usb_modemswitch" in case that would make it accessible. Nope, command not found, or something like that. In "PCC>Hardware>Browse and configure hardware" the good news is that you can find the device under "Other Hardware" with all it's details suggesting it should be fully accessible.

I shutdown my machine and attached the hard drive that had my last previous install of PCL G on it rebooted and opened the file browser and found the old Desktop folder. I copied and pasted Gnome PPP to my new desktop, opened it, filled in a few blanks - my modem ph. number for user, Cricket for PW, #777 for ph.number to dial, and (in my case, typed in /dev/ttyACM0 for device and it worked. I didn't think it would be that easy but this is after two days of feeling like a blind fish flopping around on a beach and hoping for heavy rain or a lucky flop into the water. :)

Then I checked in Synaptic and it shows Gnome PPP as installed. I don't know if that's cause I just dragged it over for the front end or if I already had it somewhere, being hidden and useless. Without that GUI on my desktop I was seriously stuck. I would suggest it would be a small gap to fill for the devs to make this type of connection doable in a new installation.

Using my Cricket Broadband A600 is very important to me. It is very helpful to me especially in checking my emails and other reports. I am also glad because they are having updates this year 2010.
