Mint 13

Postby konaexpress » Mon Jun 11, 2012 3:42 pm

Downloaded Mint13 with Cinnamon to try it out. Looks good but I think it would not be good for weaker machines. I might try out Mate next.

SolusOS is ok too .... but

Down with Debian

Go Mageia. I know it's not there yet, but it's soon to be as beloved as "ye olde Mandrake". It's PCLOS done right IMHO. :D Check out DistroWatch ratings for the last 30 days. :)

Tried Salix - Mate. Mate stand-alone is almost there. Still a few minor schnitzls to get shorted out. Won't be long now. :)

Yes, Mageia looks to be a good one too. It was the first Gnome3 distro I looked at and I found out that I don't want G3 for now. I will keep looking but I will check in on Mageia from time to time.

Mageia 2 is really outstanding. They've done a nice job. My only complain is still the package management gui. It can be a pain to select repositories and the package lists.

Hi.

If someone want test new OS try bridge linux http://millertechnologies.net/downloads.html
It's just archlinux in livecd mode + own installer (work out of box + easy installer)...

Good luck!

I tried Cinnamon, but couldn't get the live cd to boot. It gets about halfway and just stops. I tried nomodeset but it had same effect. Really disappointed. I think the problem is with my mainboard nvidia chipset and nvidia GTX 8800 video card. Seems like nothing with nvidia is working with Gnome 3.

I'm done with Gnome 3, except openSUSE. Mageia KDE was better than Gnome 3 version. :D

I haven't tested Mint 13 yet, but I downloaded and will do so, I read that you can now choose to use good old Synaptic for packages, which was one of my dealbreaking gripes about the last version of Mint, their shitty package manager. That and their menu follies are annoying and way overthought. I hear good things about 13 though, looks like they have mostly whipped the Gnome 3 garbage into at least some semblance of useability.

Ummmm, you've always had Synaptic as an optional package installer, along with their Software Manager. Both were always included, the Software Manger for those looking for a more convenient front-end, and Synaptic for those who preferred it. You must have been overlooking it mate. :/

One or the other of m machines has always had a version of Mint on it. Hell, the torrent box/file server/etc runs Mint 9 , based on ubuntu 10.04, and hasn't fallen over yet.

Dig into it? Mate, it's on the main menu, right under the Software Manager (listed as Package Manager). Just click on the main Menu button, and it's right there. :p

I have looked at Mint 13-mate and it seems to be very usable for me. However I don't like it as well as PCLOS. Maybe a PCLOS-mate might be a nice way to go. I am also going to look at Mageia-kde, I have read some good things about it.

Well I probably just didn't look close enough, I think 11 was the last one I tried, I got as far as their software manager and then had a good ol' conniption about it with a whole lot of cussin' , and menu was lame too, there were some nice elements to it...I got 13 downloaded, still haven't test-drove it, sure sounds nice. :)

When I was new to Linux, "distro-hopping" meant trying one for several days and really exploring it in depth....these days it takes about 5 minutes

Yeah, I was never too keen on the way they did the menu/desktop combo, I'd spend a few minutes to mod it back to Gnome 2 standard, and then I was happy. :)
