Incorporating New Kernel in ISO

Postby joanmc » Wed Oct 14, 2009 1:31 pm

I'm guessing that the new kernel is not yet in any of the available ISOs? If this is correct, I'm also guessing that to include it in an ISO requires remastering? Do we have some tutorials or steps to help a total newbie to this process?

Interesting question. Wondering myself. Apologies for having no answers. But awaiting any answers having newer data. :)

1. Install a new kernel
2. Restart your machine, booting the new kernel
3. Make sure everything works as expected
4. Remove all other kernels if no longer needed
5. Reboot again and then remaster

Yes HarzVieh, to both. Definitely wish to get PLCLOS-Gnome installed & functioning on this computer but always willing to learn new things in the process. Somehow I missed that Melodie had used the new kernel in her remasters so will give that a try. Then, I'll see if I can figure out how to follow Don's rather cryptic directions

OK, tried Melodie's fr remaster which though it is supposed to be gnome, appears to be kde?????? Anyway, it doesn't have the .28 version of the kernel so fails in the same way as our current PCLOS-Gnome 2009.2 stating that it can't find the media which I'm assuming is the CD/DVD-ROM.

So, now my next question......thanks very much to don_crissti for the step by step directions however, could someone tell me where I would find the kernel to install please?

From synaptic search: kernel-2.6.27.31.tex5
Install kernel-2.6.27.31.tex5
Reboot... Select it from the boot menu. Go back to synaptic remove the old kernel.
Good luck! :)

She have three different remasters, you have grabbed not the right one.. but as the number is not high enough.. I have read somewhere on Distrowatch about Mandriva.. the make something like universal ISO so you can boot it from USB stick too.. :|

joanmc,

We are shooting for a 2.6.31 kernel in the next pclos gnome release so maybe that will work out for you.
Shouldn't be too long now. :)

The news I was waiting for ! \o/ !

New remasters to do soon ! ^^

Well sorry I have to redo the last Gnome remaster, for the language to be bilingual : it is bilingual for the Xfce and the Kde version but not the Gnome one (just have to reinstall the en-EN locale, not much trouble).

For the kernel 2.6.27.31.tex5, I was told that it DO NOT boot on scsi drives, as well CD/DVD devices as on USB : joanmc, are your drives SCSI drives ?

If you don't know, you can use some command lines to find out : such as lshw as root and see on the cd/dvd line what is in the line "capability".

Yesterday a french buddy who comes regularly on #pclinuxos-fr chan reinstalled new, with my Gnome version, and the only problem he met with was he couldn't boot... until he tried the safe video mode with vesa. The rest works flawlessly, on his laptop, a eMachine e510. (Cpu sound card and so on from Intel)

For the SCSI boot, I have been told a way to redo the initrd so that scsi be possible to use, I think I want to try that. :)

Melodie: see my original post at http://linuxgator.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2051 for what my laptop consists of :) The harddrive is a SATA. So far, the only distro that will boot from a live CD is Mint 7 which uses the 2.6.28 kernel which is why I'm looking for the version as the 'oldest' I can use.

Meanwhile, seems a shame that you've just completed the previous remaster and having to gear up for the next one. The joys of ever changing technology......

Thanks so much for taking time out to look at my problem.

Hi,

Then you may want to try the PCLOS Lxde. At my web space if you like:
http://melodie.tyruiop.org/

as iso:
[ ] pclinuxos-lxde-2009.4.iso 04-Oct-2009 21:38 313M
[ ] pclinuxos-lxde-2009.4.md5sum 04-Oct-2009 21:38 60

or as torrent:

[ ] pclinuxos-lxde-2009.4.torrent.torrent 04-Oct-2009 21:40 25K

I'm not sure about this SATA story. At home we have 2 Dell : GX280 Optiplex. One of the 2 has a SATA hard drive on it (I bought 2 of theses hard drives recently).

My boyfriend installed my Xfce remaster, the one dated on October 10th, which has the 2.6.27.tex5 kernel in it. All ran smooth, no boot problem with the live CD, no problem during install, no problem whatsoever after booting.

Our machines are second or third hand, and when we got them, the bios program were the original ones : all the old machines we have at home (I don't even know how many for now) do have new bios programs : we systematically flash them to to new bios programs available.

Maybe this tip might help....
