My Bose desktop speakers are not working in PCLOS Gnome. They worked good in Ububtu10.04. Ran Alsaconf as SU but still no external sound. In sound preferences I have Bose enabled in hardware and output.
I am out of ideas. Anyone have any???

Odd. My external usb speakers didn't have any noticable issues. Your soundcard does show up as working in the Control Center, yes?

Yes: This from PCC
Here you can select an alternative driver (either OSS or ALSA) for your sound card (nVidia Corporation|MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S High Definition Audio).

Your card currently use the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver (default driver for your card is "snd_hda_intel")

I have a dropdown box available to choose a different driver. The only other driver is "unknown".

Mine uses usb also, but only for power. The sound plug still needs plugging into the actual sound port, hence my question.

Mine gets it's power from the wall plug. This is my speaker set-up;

Power goes to sub woofer, satellites plug into sub woofer, cord runs up and plugs into USB. Also another cord for volume with jacks for headphones and mic.

aTunes music client I can only get to play on the internal speakers BUT Rhythmbox plays on my Bose speakers, Yea! oh my happy happy ears! Woot!

I see. Yours are completely different to mine then. My sound has to run from the soundcard to the speakers, yours seems to have it's own built-in or something, since it seems to be bypassing it. I am unsure what to suggest, unfamiliar with the hardware you have, sorry.

Hopefully someone more familiar with your h/w can give better assistance. Good luck.

Are you running "dual boot" system with both Windows and Linux????

...I don't understand - do you mean your tower or monitor has "built in speakers"? or are you getting a partial working of the external speaker system?

...Double Check your GMIXER {volume} settings...?

Another check: SYSTEM>PREFERENCES>(scroll wayyy down to : SOUND....) under HARDWARE TAB- try : OFF ...because Gnome sound OPTIONS seem all ANALOG, and your wonderful sound system is DIGITALLY INTEGRAL!

IT DOES NOT SEEM TO NEED A SOUND CARD!!! Pull it out of your motherboard pci slot...

From WIKIPEDIA : "..The Companion 5 system also works with Linux kernels that support USB audio including Pulse Audio. Because the Companion 5 uses a USB connection, a computer sound card is not needed."

*Also maybe there's a setting in your BIOS for usb's enable them all... ???etc..
*Does your motherboard have ONBOARD SOUND built in??? turn it off. {in Bios}
* Are you sure you have usb 2.0? and not 1.0?
... try different ports??? because sometimes the motherboard usb ports go out...
*IF you also have a PCI SOUND CARD, might want to disable it in the BIOS...
there might be an IRQ conflict somewhere...

If it still doesn't work after all this...

Another scenario thats an easy troubleshoot - is to RUN a PCLOS 2010 {kde}- LIVE CD and see if the sound automajically works....maybe you got a bad GNOME download to your HD...

If you have access to another computer - make sure your speaker system is totally operational...plug it into it...to verify...

Worse scenario you can download and try different LIVE distros like : MEPIS {debian base} or VECTOR {slack base} to see if PCLOS {mandriva base} is really the culprit.

I tried to cover all the bases, ...although sometimes with linux you have to work for your "ups"...maybe you'll get a home run!

...other than that, use a basic stereo 2 speaker setup... When you get my age, you cannot hear everything anyway!

If you install Pulse Audio, including padevicechooser and pavucontrol along with all other plugins for other sound schemes and apps, so they use Pulse, you will have the facility in pavucontrol to send the sound from any source to any output you wish.
You can even have two different sources/apps playing into two different sinks (speakers/headphones/wireless headsets etc). It does not matter to pulse how the sound sink (speaker etc.) is connected ..... through sound card or USB.

Pulse may then need to be enabled in PCC - Hardware - Sound

In addition adding a small text file will make Pulse the default for the sound system (details below).

In doing this all sound is then controlled by Pulse and there are no conflicts. Just set all devices/apps etc to use 'Default' and Pulse will give you the required control. Use gstreamer-properties to set the Plugin to Pulse and the device to Default for both input (pulsesrc) and output(pulsesink) pipelines.

Just copy and paste the below code into a text file and save it as
/etc/asound.conf

From then on ONLY use Pulse (Default) for best results and no conflicts.

Pulse is a marvellous sound control system when it is installed correctly and fully. Half measures will only break sound in many places and give a terrible experience.
