Moving from PClinux KDE to PCL Gnome ?

Postby Cressida » Sun Sep 12, 2010 8:49 pm

I have been running PCL 2010.07 on my wife's computer and have been having problems with the latest version. It appears most of the problems are related to KDE. Therefore if I switch to the Gnome version can I leave the existing data in /home and just reformat and load PCL Gnome into / and will it be able to find the settings and information it needs in /home? I kind of doubt it but since the kernel is basically the same I thought maybe it will.

I haven't found much discussion on this but have we had very many users move to Gnome from PCL KDE where I might read about what they did with the installation and problems, etc?

Well.. that's the idea. So if you install new version of gnome Distribution over old, you will have your old theme and background on your new install.. at least that's how I understand it, because it's saved in "/home". But because you want install gnome over KDE it probably can't, because gnome is different.

If you are using KDE, task-gnome is the Metapackage in synaptic for the GNOME desktop environment, &
it is a meta-package, meaning that its purpose is to contain dependencies for running the GNOME2. If you currently are using Gnome & wish to have KDE4 as a desktop environment, you could install task-kde4 and have it as a choice under sessions on the login window. You don't need to do any formatting. I installed task-kde4 with synaptic and have it as a choice when logging in. It seems to have a few minor bugs so I still use Gnome 2.30.2 as the default desktop.

Even though PCLinuxOS is primarily a KDE distribution, some prefer the GNOME as a default desktop install. This makes ones that may be new to linux in general to have a ready made GNOME desktop without the inconvenience of downloading, installing and configuring the whole GNOME desktop from a PCLinuxOS (KDE) install.

This is from our main site.. so some inconvenience will be still there I assume.. or we should revise the above statement if things have been changed over time.. (it's at least two years old now..)

Suggest backing up the settings and files you need and wiping the install for a new one, 2007 and 2010 are very different beasts. You'd likely end up with a conflict working with such settings inherited from a different install. If you needed to reinstall 2010 you could just use /home again, but I don't think it's at all good to do so with a release several years older, they never did get the upgrade to work, so I doubt you'd have a trouble free time with the old settings. Just see about importing your mail and browser settings, and see how you go. But def do a fresh install.
Remember this, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

Let's share our knowledge. Otherwise, what's the point?

Just install Gnome over the KDE installation on /root partition. Since you install Gnome over KDE, you can't access your old account on /home. So create new user account and copy your data from the old account to your new account. :D
Born, get old and die, it's the cycle of live. I'm not afraid of death, I'm afraid I can't do something good before I die.
