Install/Synaptic/Repo/Update problems

Postby premamotion » Wed Jan 26, 2011 4:40 am

Hello to everybody, I`m a new PCLinuxOS user, distro hopper for about two years... Installed 2010.10 version, but I have a lot of problems, I cannot figure out many things, please help me...

1. How to install a rpm? I open it with Synaptic, and... nothing happens... In Synaptic I see only the packages I have installed on my system...

2. Synaptic is strange, not like the usual Ubuntu`s one.... I cannot search packeges, there is no text box for searching (like in Ubuntu..etc). Synaptic displays me only the packages I have... that`s all...

3. Everytime I do a refresh, repositories return 404... I used also the Repository Speed Test... everything goes well, but no updates, no upgrade.. how is that possible?

Please help me, I`m searching a cure for my distro hopping and I hope PCLOS will please me... I think that`s something wrong with my Synaptic, but everything else is almost perfect!

Here are the screenshots: http://picasaweb.google.com/enea.george ... directlink

Thanks a lot and best wishes too all! Thank you!

Hello, and welcome. :)

1. You should not be installing RPM files from outside the repo. Is not advised. Most things are available in the repo, and those that are not you can usually request something be added if need be. What are you trying to install please?

2. Synaptic is still Synaptic, you CAN search mate, just click on Search and it bring up the search box. :)

3. You should only enable 1 repo, and one only. Have a read here viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1067 , and then perhaps have a browse of the viewforum.php?f=15&start=0 Tips and tricks section for some answers to other questions you may have, is why it's there, to help. :)

There's nothing "wrong" with your Synaptic mate, it's just a tiny bit different in looks is all. Functions just the same. Despite right-clicking on .rpm files, and offering to install them using Synaptic (no idea why that option is there, it doesn't work that way), it won't do it. You CAN install them manually, but it requires a little bit of Terminal typing to do so, very simple once you know the trick. :)

As for setting a repo, I usually choose one I know to be near me (I use my ISP, as it's one of the mirrors), and don't usually bother with the speedtest of the mirrors, but the few times I have, mine always wins for me anyway. :)

I hope this answers some of your queries, and if you have a read of where I've linked you, it should offer some helpful tips and suggestions to help you. Cheers. :)

Thank you so much for your fast reply!!!

I saw the posts you linked, and start it over again... same problems... with all the repos I try... just returns 404... I try to search packeges via Synaptic, and finds nothing... what to do?

Uploaded new printscreens here: http://picasaweb.google.com/enea.george ... directlink

Which repo(s) should I add?

Thank you so much!

Odd. You are doing a "Reload" after choosing a repo , yes? The one I use is

rpm http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2010 main updates nonfree kde4 games

Should be available in repo list, but if not make sure to add it , and under URI add
Code: Select all
http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/pclinuxos/apt/
and under Distribution add
Code: Select all
pclinuxos/2010
, and under Sections add
Code: Select all
main updates nonfree kde4 games

Then Reload, it should work fine, does for me. If you still have problems, then something else is amiss. I understand some of the repos being down, but not all of them.

Thank you so much! The repo that you gave me is reachable... the others are dead..
Thank you so much for giving me a valid repo, now I`m able to update my system...

I wonder why all the other repos are down... and I wonder why Repository Speed Test gives me all dead repos... Somebody here on the forum can do a check?

Thank you so much for your help!!!! :D Have a wonderful day!

The most reliable and quickest European repos I have come across are ftp.ch.debian.org or ftp.heanet.ie. Both have been tested just prior to this post and ARE on-line.

These don't need to be added, they are there if you look down the repos list BUT only have ONE checked and remove the check from the default repos which is ftp.niuug.ni/ibiblio

As the main ibiblio server is being moved at the present time, see here http://www.ibiblio.org/archive/2011/01/ ... -the-move/ the mirrors will need to catch up when it is back online but you will be able to run an update from either of the two repos I mentioned which will get you updated to around 10 days ago.

There has been no fresh updates in the past 10 days and judging by posts on the main PCLOS Forum it could take another few days before the ibiblio server move is completed.

Mirrors wont work 'till the ibiblio's servers are migrated to some new host i believe... so we have to be patient...

There were two directories for PCLinuxOS listed on Ibiblio ...... Texstar & PCLinuxOS.

Some of the mirrors were syncing with /pclinuxos ..... and that directory has disappeared since the Ibiblio move, thus those mirrors no longer have any PCLOS content.

The mirrors that sync off /texstar still have content and are usable.

Tex apparently has another problem IIUC, he has not been able to rsync to the new Ibiblio server and thus has been unable to correct the above problem or upload any of the waiting updates.

Hopefully all will be well soon.

regards.

I'm glad I searched before I asked. I tried to check for updates and the failure comes when I try to Reload. The message I get says something like "Failure to retrieve all directories." I hope Tex and Co. get it sorted soon.

Ok I don't see my local indiana servers on the list any more. i updated my sources.lst file with one from the main pclos forums. Anything special i need to add to the sections or anything so i can get gnome updates on my zen mini install?

Synaptic should show your new repo list so after you select the repo and Reload, you should be able to get all your updates just as before. I didn't need to add anything to sections. Did you get your sources.list by running apt-sources-update? Some of those mirrors are still hit and miss from what I've been seeing. Hopefully they'll all be settled in and back to normal soon and I hope the Indiana servers get PCLOS mirrored again. I haven't read anything about why they aren't with us lately.

When I ran apt-sources-update it gave me an error so i downloaded the new source file from the opening pclos forums and then copied it over to proper place with a command i found in the same thread. My zen mini is now updating considering its been months since its been last updated and I've got like 106 updates. I tried to run the apt-sources-update command again and its it spit out the same error. Once this is done updating Ill post the error that it keeps spitting out at me.

Europe severs are slow as a snail for me since I reside in the midwest in The United States of America and the inidiana servers were perfect for me.

Ok didnt get the error this time but I did get it yesterday when i was trying this.
