Adding a folder to Screensavers?

Postby username » Sun May 08, 2011 12:01 pm

How do I add a different folder of images to the Screensaver Preferences other than Pictures folder? Gnome has no setting to graphically do this.

Doesn't seem to be a way using gnome screensaver, xscreensaver has some options. You can always do the easy hack, put your new folder in your home, rename current "pictures" folder to something else, pics2 or some such, name new folder "pictures".

:) Funny you should mention that because I thought about doing that, but I thought there would be an "official" gnome way that I was unaware of. I thought I maybe could edit as root some path in /usr/share/*something*, but I couldn't find an appropriate file. One is able to do this in KDE I believe, I don't know why gnome didn't include it, because it seems like an obvious thing people might want to do.

I'll do some more searching first, then if I don't find anything I'll do the renaming thing & see if that works. Thanks for the response. :)

No idea, I prefer to use the Electric-Sheep Screensaver myself, much more entertaining (no, it's nothing to do with sheep :p), constantly generating new fractal images.

As for your question, no idea I'm sorry. Have you looked in Synaptic?

I thought so too, and your question really interested me, I was just sure there was some way to edit a .conf file somewhere...looked all over the net for about 30 minutes before I posted, then tracked down every single screensaver file on my machine, no joy at all.

I thought I had found an alternative method by using Slideshow in the System>Preferences>Screenlets Daemon, but when selecting Folder to use nothing appeared when clicking on that, so I guess that part of the application doesn't work. At least on my machine. Renaming the Pictures folder idea seems the best & simplest option at this point. Thank you for your help.

Found something that might work for you, in Synaptic there is a package: screensaver-settings

Here is description:
xFX Screensaver Settings provided by gnome-screensaver-preferences
xFX Screensaver Settings
screensaver-settings provides an almost identical interface to that provided by gnome-screensaver-preferences
but with the addition of a "Preferences" button that will let you change the settings of any of the screensavers
in your system. Additionally, it features the ability to let you select which screensavers you want to use while
in Random mode.

Link to site: http://software.xfx.net/utilities/sss/

Version in repo is old, there is a much newer one available, you might try it out and see if it works for you, if so maybe make a package update request for the newer one.

good luck!
