Why I have not forgotten windows

Postby Nippur » Sat Nov 13, 2010 2:02 pm

I want to explain why I have not been able to switch completely to PcLinux:

I have tried and failed repeatedly to connect my computer from my home to my office computer in another town...
I have easili managed to do this using VNC server and viewer running on windows.I can also move files from computer to computer with this system.
I have never been able to do this with linux, maybe I'm not clever enough, but I have not found a guide on the web good enough to understand.
If anybody knows of a not too complicated way of doing this, it would be much appreciated.

Thx in advance!

So here a video of what I have just tried and have not been successful.
I must say that running VNC on WINE I do have success but cannot move files from pc to pc.

Use TightVNC

http://www.vanemery.com/Linux/VNC/vnc-over-ssh.html

i never used any vnc, but it says this vnc has file transfer option.

Other solution you might concern is using Dropbox http://www.dropbox.com/ to sync files on your computers

Have you tried Teamviewer server/viewer. It works cross-platform also. I have managed my daughter's xp from PCLos before. It's free. I can never dump xp because of Quicken.

Finance management? I never used it, but i know there are a lot of great linux apps for finance.

I don't really need xp, but soon i will start working on a game. And i'll have to work in Epic's UDK...

I have a question: Is there a way of logging on to the other's computer with nobody to tell you the ID and Password?
When I'm home there is nobody at the office!

Besides this, this programme is really easy and looks good!
Thx

The server has to be set up and then the password and user-id must be given to the client. Once this is set up, if it's not changed the user can be un-attended. If the server is configured to start on re-boot then the client end can reboot the server and then re-connect after it boots. A really powerful system and fast.

A lot of people gave you some information. But I think there needs to be some clarification. You stated that you can't leave windows because you need to log in at work. Does that mean you can connect from windows? If the answer is yes then I assume you know the password for vnc and have connected to your workplace before. I use vnc all the time and I only use linux. So the first thing you need to do is make sure you can ping your workplace server. So that is >
ping < name or ip of server>
// note: does your workplace have a fully qualified domain name or are you using an IP number?

If you can ping the server you might want to check if the default port 5900 is the one you are supposed to use. Some times the port to use is 5800 for an http connection ( meaning using a browser.) If you have permission from your sys admin you can use nmap to check if the port is open. You need to tell them that you are going to scan their ports or they might think you are trying to hack the system. So please make it known that you will be doing a port scan. If someone is going to try and hack into the system using nmap will be the first thing that is done.
( And as an aside in the second movie for the Matrix Trinity used nmap to break into the power company computer to shut down the system. But if you get the DVD that part has been taken out. In the theaters they actually showed how to hack a system. )

Here is what it looks like when I use nmap on my home network:

joseph@localhost:~$ nmap -p 5800-5999 192.168.1.18

Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-08-01 17:41 MDT
Nmap scan report for 192.168.1.18
Host is up (0.048s latency).
Not shown: 199 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
5900/tcp open vnc

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1.46 seconds

machine 192.168.1.18 is my home theater. I searched, port range 5800-5999, for both the http vnc client and the regular vnc client. As you can see I only have the one client. But this does not mean you job will look like this. Your sysadmin could set it up differently. I have my vnc client set to the default port but that does not mean the sysadmin at your work did. He/She could have set it anywhere they want.

Now if you don't want to ask your boss permission to scan the ports get a live windows cd or usb drive and go to a library. Most libraries has computers to use. But some get upset if you reboot them into a live cd. Just be prepared to make a hasty exit when you do this. And use a library far from your home.

One thing you will need to check is are they using vnc or are they using freenx. Newmachine's NX does the same job as VNC but does it in a different manner. But you still will be able to use linux with NX. So ask your sysadmin.

Great post and info Argon99! Too cool about Trinity using nmap, I love that little utility

FYI for those reading, there is a nice GUI frontend for nmap called (appropriately enough) Zenmap, it's in the repo. When you install Zenmap, you'll get a menu entry in More Applications>Monitoring that says "nmap". Clicking on that entry however, will only open it as normal user, and you'll get a warning message that pops up that indicates that some features are disabled if you do not run nmap as root.

The fix for this, is to go to Sytem>Preferences>Main Menu, open it, navigate to the nmap entry, right click and select "Properties", then in the "command" line where it says "usr/bin/zenmap", add a "gksu" in front of it, so the final command reads:
Code: Select all
gksu usr/bin/zenmap

This will cause it to open the normal dialogue asking for root password to continue, and all features will be available. You can also change the title of the menu entry if you like, I edited mine to read "Zenmap".

I don't think I was completely clear in my last post. I doubt that the Linux box is on the net. That is why I wanted to see the OP do a ping of the address of the comp at his work place. Also I wonder if it really is vnc that windows is using. I use Remina all the time. But it doesn't only use vnc. You have to tell it to do that. The video was a nice idea but I couldn't tell what was going on, it was to out of focus. Especially for the windows machine.

So when you start Ramina there is a menu bar at the top and a icon bar below that. But when it you open a session you get, at the top of the window, a title that says "Profile." Below that there are three input boxes, name, group and protocol. You have to select the proper protocol. There are seven so make sure you are using the same protocol that the windows box is using. ( I think this could also be the reason it doesn't connect.) Also under "name" you can change that to Office and then you will only have to click on that name when Remina opens. Make sure to click save after you have it setup properly.

Good info :)
But, once again, i believe for beginners it is best to use TeamViewer

I took a look at their web site and it doesn't look like teamviewer is under the GPL and therefor not open source. Personally I would never advice a beginner to use proprietary software. Especially when vnc viewer is so easy. And Remina makes all easy. And I seriously doubt that any remote application will work if the wrong protocol is specified. That's assuming that the sysadmin at his workplace has set up the remote system and the employee only has the ability to log in not change the company wide remote access.

And it looks like I wrote all that for nothing as the OP hasn't come back.

The original post was 9 months old, I would assume the OP has found a solution by now

But despite that, your post adds to the database and is very helpful, i'm sure it will be read by others and be useful to them. :D

The thing that's easy to forget, is that for every poster on a forum, there's 100 lurkers and drive-by's, that's why I detail all of my efforts, even if no one is replying to my threads, because I know how valuable such posts by others have been to me.
