Zen 11.11 re-master, did I mention it's a user-remaster?

Postby Dragynn » Wed Oct 19, 2011 1:01 pm

Allright, gonna wade into the fray with my own interpretation of Zen, which will still be 90% Siamer's 2011.7 on which it will be based. Going to leave addlocale and not mess with translations, going to change some color and icon schemes and add a little and take out a few. Won't be adding media programs or any of that, this will be more true to the original. Will be fully updated with all current bug fixes discussed on here on the forum. Some added improvements of my own, extra bleachbit cleaners custom tailored for Zen, proper icon association, icons on all menu entries etc. Firefox 7 or 8 or whatever the hell it's up to by the time i'm ready to burn an iso   I'm going to lighten up a bit further on this one, mc won't make the cut i'm afraid

Leaving the original plymouth and grub artwork, but changing others stuff a bit, a taste:

It's a user remaster BTW, srsly. Did you think I was the Zen developer? Nope, Chuck Testa.

Okay, that went faster than normal, less to do on a true mini, plus i'm getting a little faster at doing these.

This re-master is of Siamer's 2011.7 , all codecs and such have been left, no translations or system files have been hacked on, I left lilo and addlocale, everything is pretty much as the base systems are on PCLOS, I did add the PCLOS-specific bleachbit cleaners from my last re-master plus I fixed one remaining error (autoremove). Wallpaper is mine and colors are re-done in theme and in terminal, galculator etc. and in root account. Replaced GDM backgrounds with black, looks great, saves space, left plymouth alone. Menus have all icons now. Desktop icons can all be deleted, no having to go into gconf to turn them off

Fixed Synaptic.desktop command and also /root/.bashrc. Did complete updates as of today 10-20-2011, 199 of them, Firefox is now 7.

Removed:
midnight commander
gcalctool
lomanager
apturl (deprecated)
dupeclean and gui
some themes

Added:
galculator (much smaller than gcalctool, does the same thing)
gnome-volume-manager (I feel this is an important little piece of infrastructure)
Oxy2-ZEN icons (the stock gnome icons are horrible)

A nice fully updated and bug-fixed Zen to build on  :D

First iso came out to 341.1 mb 8) :D , I need to burn one now and test and do a test install as well, if all goes well i'll upload it by tomorrow.

Almost done, added gconf translations back in and tested addlocale, works fine, I specifically tested it in Francais to avoid the "tssst...tsssst"-ing of the resident French bombshell

Had an issue with panel icons disappearing on install again, fixing that cr*p now, fixing the leftover empty drak-install desktop I left on last iso. Re-writing and putting zeninfo back in for password/version dialog on livecd.

Trying to figure out a couple of lingering issues:

1. In zen 2010, when you opened a Nautilus window as administrator, it added the notification "(as superuser)" at the top after the name of whatever folder you were in, so if you were in say /usr/share/icons it would say at the top of the window: icons (as superuser)

But in Zen 2011.7 it doesn't do this, the only way to tell that the window is a root window is by looking to the left at the sidebar and noting whether your home file says "guest" (or whatever you named home account) or "root".

2. When you hit the "lock screen" button in the menu, it locks it, and offers a simple gtk window to input your password etc. to unlock, this is fine, but the problem is, the background is a glaring microsoft blue, which doesn't work at all with the theme. I don't see a background jpg or png for this, so I think gtk is just drawing it blue, and I would like to change that to black. The config file is in /usr/share/gnome-screensaver/lock-dialog-default.ui , and it's basically a type of xml, anybody know gtk enough to help me change this file to add black as the background?

Wow! I'm blown away dude, I looked in earlier and saw your posts, and right while I was in the midst of serious frustration too, and it gave me a new head of steam, you rock Kona! :D

Got the screenlocker issue dealt with, fixed the leftover install.desktop file, it will now disappear after installation like it's supposed to, I re-added zeninfo with updated text.....have fixed so many tiny bugs and inconsistencies here and there that i've totally lost count....the new xorg and toolchain and all the updates from the past months, seem to use a little more ram at idle, and that bugs me, but other than that, this is the best Zen re-master i've done yet. Not adding the other programs I usually do on my not-so-mini's, allowed me a lot of extra time to attend to the niceties.

Again this is a true mini, no media programs or utilities added, and AFAIK it meets all the requirements of a PCLOS "official" release as I have not hacked on system files other than to make some much needed changes for aesthetics and function, translations are intact and addlocale works perfectly. It actually is better I gotta say in several ways, no other version has a complete Bleachbit set-up with PCLOS-specific cleaners/truncators and zero errors even when run as root. This is just one of many areas I have devoted a lot of attention to. Ran the new iso, 341.5 mb, about to burn it and test the install...IF everything goes well this time, i'll upload tonight as promised and post the link.

This forum sucks and I don't want to be a part of it. I am no longer using this account. I have asked for it to be removed but was refused. It's therefore locked by using fake e-mail address. I do not want to be associated with this forum in any way.

For mannnny reasons. Midnight commander is the best file manager / text editor and so on there is from CLI... If X fails mc can save hours simply because it allows to do stuff faster. Even in the DE sometimes I use terminal / mc to edit / manage stuff... And there are MANY other reasons like build it ssh / ftp and so on and so forth...

True mini without mc is just wrong... ;)

Another question... I hear that Slax took over Zen Mini iso... What happened to that project? Did slax decided to let it go?
