Skype 2.2 no video answer for KDE - how to do in Gnome?

Postby mamas » Sun Nov 27, 2011 5:05 am

I do have trouble running Skype 2.2
Although researching in the forums here I couldn't find an answer.
Then I ran across a post in the PCLOS forum:

The thing is that if you open Skype directly through the menu, video does not work.
If you open Skype on terminal with LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype video does work.
Why is this? Can't it be solved?

I tried it too. When I start Skype in the Terminal video works - but I don#t know how to achieve the start of skype with these parameters from the main menue.. Going to Main menue > more applications > configuration > main menue > Internet > Skype > edit > and then copy and paste of that command doesn't do the trick! I only get an error message about child process can't be performed or something like that.

ANy ideas or help?

follow next steps to create a shell script for skype_with_video:

Code: Select all
create a new file (on desktop) called "skype_with_video"

then open it in editor and paste:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype

/usr/bin/skype

save and close.
right click on file than properties, check executable under the permissions tab.

You should be good to go

Hy slax - now I can start skype double clicking the file. Then I have tro click run - and it starts. Video isi ok - sound is completely messed up. Isn't there a way to do this setting that command somehow as the starting command in the main menu??

Thank you for that tip just the same!

Seems is has something to do with the alsmixer settings. Can't figure out what.
Searched the net - but alsa is all strange to me. Played on all the options in alsamixer but nothing worked. Can't seem to choose a microphone device here - it's either Intel or my webcam. Such a pain!
All options tabs in Skype for sound settings don't work. SO frustrating, when such a tiny things makes you want to drag out the old XP again. Anybody have an idea??

Hi Mamas, sound can be a lil pain in linux at times, we've all got hit with the sound bug a time or two

So, best way for us to help is with a bit more info from you, can you copy/paste the code from the .desktop shortcut you just made for skype?

Also need your sound issue explained a little more clearly, is there no sound at all from skype? Does sound work okay in other programs? Is it just the microphone?

I can probaby get your simple issues sorted and walk you through setting up the menu entry (it's really easy), but Slax is the man with the real code skills

Unfortunately I don't use Skype, so have no experience testing it, but it sounds like it's more a matter of just getting some settings tweaked.
