[Solved] Installed cups driver, synaptic says its broken

Postby Ozdemon » Sun Feb 05, 2012 10:39 pm

I have PCLOS Gnome up to date. I have had problems with my Brother MFC-8820D for some time. However today I finally got it to do everything I want by installing the cupswrapper driver from http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html#MFC-8820D.

I followed the instructions from the Brother site i.e. using the command:
Code: Select all
rpm -ihv --nodeps cupswrapperMFC8820D-1.0.2-1.i386.rpm

(I should say I also re-installed the lpr driver with the same command.)

The only problem is that synaptic insists that the package is broken. Is there any way to either modify the package so that synaptic is happy or to get synaptic to ignore it?

You are pretty much on your own with this one. When you install something from outside the PCLOS repo, it damages your system. Your rpm database shows one thing and synaptic says another. They are no longer in sync with each other and you will see the warnings.
Does your printer work now?

Thanks for the reply. The printer now works perfectly. It is only synaptic that has a problem.

I found this post from Tex which states how to tell Synaptic to ignore a broken package: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,69952.0.html

So after opening a terminal, changing the user to su and entering:
Code: Select all
rpm -e --justdb cupswrapperMFC8820D

all seems to be fixed. :D
