orca problems at start

Postby satuser083 » Thu Apr 19, 2012 10:04 am

If I start orca via Applications -> More Applications -> Accessibility (the command is orca --replace I think :? ) it starts, thinks for a while and then crashes. If I start it in a terminal (command orca) it starts the Preferences-window after the following error-messages

Code: Select all
** WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'GMountMountFlags' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'
** WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'GDriveStartFlags' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'
** WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowState' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'
** WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowActions' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'
** WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowMoveResizeMask' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'

I imagine that these messages are significant, because the Preferences definitely don't work as one would expect.

Has anyone else had this problem and solved it? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm using gnome-mmxii, BTW.

There is definitely something wrong. When starting orca here, it tries then crashes and causes python to hang. The desktop freezes ( no mouse or keyboard response ). Have to kill python from a tty. Haven't found a fix but at-spi seems to be the culprit.

Try orca --debug in a terminal. There will be a file named debug<date>.out in your current directory. Maybe you can get something from that.

Thanks for the tip, the result is:

It means nothing to me. :?

I'll do a bit more web-searching next week and will get back.

Thanks, once again

I have installed
    speex
    festival
    python-speechd
    espeak
I have heard "welcome to orca" after several starts and restarts of orca, but it eventually crashes and hangs.

Done a little more investigating.
From what I gather Orca gets rebuilt each time Gnome receives an upgrade. In short, they are a matching set. As long as Gnome stays the same everything should work.
In a rolling release nothing stays the same very long.

Someone who really needs the benefits of Orca should probably use a static distro such as Centos6.

That's a shame, because it severely limits orca's application prospects. Will look at the possibility of using Centos, however; perhaps that's the answer.

Many thanks for your help :D :) .
