OpenBox CC

Postby konaexpress » Mon Jun 25, 2012 11:47 am

OK, I will be working on the CC for OpenBox over at http://whiteislandsoftware.com/forum/index.php?page=forumview I don't mean to send users away from this forum but it is not setup for user developer projects so any one that is interested can find this project over there.

1. Help with testing would be great.
2. What files will need to be edited?
3. How many files are there and where are they located.
4. What options would you like to see and how user friendly would you like it to be?

I will also be making the setup wizard for LXDE so head over if you are interested in that too. I might be able to do a setup wizard for Draygnns gnome distro but I will need input on that because I don't know where all the files are in Gnome.

I am new at this so please be patient with me.

Just wondering if anyone would be interested in an info screen for OpenBox?

Cr@pp! The Gambas forum is going offline as of July 8th. Now I have to figure out what to do about my little projects. It was the only English speaking forum for Gambas. I may have to switch BASIC languages to one that will be supported........

I hope I don't have to go to Python, its a B!tch to get all the GUI stuff to work with the IDE of choice.

Well, looks like we are backup and running now.

For now I am playing with the GDM in Melodys Bonsai.

Hi,

I would like it very much if you avoid Gambas as a background (as well as Java for instance). We try to go light, not heavy. As I read at the Lxde mailing list, there is Vala, which is not (as pcman said) perfect, but allows programming in an efficient way. Or you could try lua, which is also light. I have seen one or the other used for creating programs, which were later ported to C.

Aïa ! A thunderstorm here !?

Well, an info screen for Openbox is not necessary. This would rather belong to the system part. (I pray that the devs generally speaking stop putting all and anything in a CC, but rather have one for all hardware, and be desktop agnostic, and one for desktop/type of environment, and have none of the programs related to things which belong to all desktops)

GDM : what would you think about trying Lightdm ? I find it not bad at all, and pretty easy to change it's background. :-)

Let me see what I can come up with because lua is nice but it is interpreted also like Gambas from what I know, no idea what Vala is.

I will take a look at Vala and BaCon wich is a BASIC to C converter, it makes really small and fast apps.

Hi Kona,
Vala, https://live.gnome.org/Vala is what pcman has chosen to replace programming directly to C, for the Lxde components such as hum... pcmanfm, lxpanel, that kind of items. Let me see if I can find the thread in the archives of the Lxde mailing list.

Got it ! Please have a look starting here: http://www.mail-archive.com/lxde-list@l ... 02070.html

Regards,
Mélodie

PS: to you question "2. What files will need to be edited?" : rc.xml already has obconf but obconf would need a few more sections (I would have to dig in to say what, maybe other people will have ideas about that). menu.xml has obmenu, which begins to get old (I think it still works though, should need to check). Well, the look could perhaps be improved.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/obmenu/files/obmenu

As far as I know, the autostart file has no gui. The three files can be found under ~/.config/openbox.

This is what I want to know, what needs to be fixed/helped for new users?

Hi,
When you will have created a Configuration Center which allows linking any program related to Openbox in it by providing "click and go" buttons, with or without sections, whatever you want to imagine, then we well test it and provide more information. Your project is too young at this stage to be able to provide every detail.

I think there had existed a gui having for name "obkey" too, to create keyboard shortcuts. http://code.google.com/p/obkey

The only one which does not have a gui at all is autostart.

So are you looking for a CC that will have icons for all these apps so that they can be found? Searching through the files loaded with your OpenBox, I found what I think is useful stuff but it is not in the menu or linked to anything I think, not sure.

I will have to think about this. -John

Yes, a little like the PCC does for the hardware and the different services. I think it would be most convenient !

Sorry Melody but this has become a dead issue here on this site. This is a Gnome only site, I'm cool with this. If you want to continue then we will have t find another site to do it on.

Hi,
A new section dedicated to English speaking Linux distros users and contributors has been opened here. So you are welcome to register to this forum in order to present the Openbox CC project, for which you might even gain contributors (there are a few coders at this community).

Hope to see you there soon !
