Help! No control centre (SOLVED)

Postby SteveHoffmanUK » Fri May 09, 2008 4:35 pm

I am a refugee from Ubuntu and I've just installed PCLinuxOS Gnome.

A great experience - everything works fine: wireless, browser, email etc, BUT:

My Gnome version doesn't seem to have a Control Centre, where I can do such things as, for example, install a printer. I gather that there should be an item in the System?Administration (or maybe Preferences?) called "Configure your computer", but there's no such thing. There's no icon for the CC in the panel as there was when I was running the live CD.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks for the quick reply - even faster than Ubuntu forum! :)

Hmmm.

The /etc/skel/Desktop file is empty on my live PCLOS-G.

Presumably that means a bad burn. OK, back to the drawing boards.

Should I do a complete reinstall, or just copy that one file across?

I shouldn't be working on this stuff late at night. :)

It is NOT true that there was nothing in my /etc/skel folder - (had forgotten about hidden files ). There was something called "Noname" there.

Anyway, I had forgotten that I have a laptop with PCLOS-G installed and working OK, so I copied the /etc/skel/Desktop from that and replaced the one with Noname. I then put the Control Center icon in my panel and can now see it, but "Configure your computer" doesn't work - I click on it and nothing happens.

Have concluded that:
1. My iso burn was OK, because it is the one I used on my lappy, which works fine.
2. I had a bad install, so I will reinstall PCLOS-G and hope it goes OK this time.
