Split

Postby allstar1960 » Tue Apr 07, 2009 8:32 am

How will the split in PCLinuxOS affect the gnome version?

The only frustration that I have had with PCLInux is that sometimes the repos get a little stale.

More likely nobody knows what you're talking about!

What split are you referring to? The split between PCLOS Gnome and PCLOS KDE? That's always existed. Is there some new split occurring that I don't know about?

Please explain, then maybe you'll get a sensible answer.

Let me explain it this way:

Once upon a time, there was a tree full of apes, silently swaying in the branches. Then, one day, quite a large number of said apes climbed down and ran off to form a new colony in a new tree.

This exodus was "big news" that is known to everyone in the world except the lowly monkeys on the ground who happen to use PCLinuxOS. The news item, published on March 30th, is here:
http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20090330#news

The apes that remained behind in the old tree (if there are any left) continue to remain silent, while the apes that set up shop in the new tree, are vociferously squawking about "Lessons Learned" in their new tree right here:
http://forum.unity-linux.org/thread-22.html

There is some speculation that the apes left behind in the old tree may be "slow learners" and have not yet assimilated any of the "Lessons Learned" by their more vociferous brethren in the new tree, which is why we user monkeys of PCLinuxOS on the ground find ourselves playing the role of mushrooms being kept in the dark and find ourselves wondering what is going on among the apes high up in the tree canopy.

If you are an "executive" monkey who needs just a quick summary of what happened, you can find one here:
http://pclinuxosuser.blogspot.com/2009_ ... chive.html

Where all this leaves those of us whose businesses depend on a functioning computer, and find ourselves tasked with assessing the risk of using PCLinuxOS from a continuity of business perspective, is a good question. At the moment, there don't appear to be any answers forthcoming.

Thanks, bit_flipper.

I am clearly one of the user-monkeys sitting on the ground completely unaware of all of this. I don't normally read Distro-watch and am only concerned about whether PCLinuxOS does the job, which it does better than any other distro I have tried (not many). I am impressed at the responsiveness of this forum and the generally helpful attitude of those who run and take part in it. The only unnerving aspect of the forum is that for reasons that utterly baffle me, I am labeled as a Hero Member - surely a mistake?

I agree that it must be unnerving for business users to see this kind of explosion and fallout if their businesses depend on a stable support environment. I am sorry to hear about Texstar's health problems, and I suggest that it must be a number one priority to put in place an arrangement that does not make the distro so dependent on a single person, if that is the case. That's not meant as a criticism, just a principle that all distros should follow.

I was just referring to the texstar thing that recently happened in which some developers were upset and will no longer be affiliated on the PCLInuxOS Team. I wasn't sure if it would have any effect on the Gnome team.

The article is below.
Thanks

Internal issues have rocked the world of PCLinuxOS, with numerous developers quitting the project. The issues appear to have started when project lead, Bill Reynolds (Texstar), took a year-long break from running the distribution and left the distro's primary system administrator, Solis, in charge. Without input from the project founder, development of PCLinuxOS 2009 by the community continued but just before release, Solis halted it so that Reynolds could overview it. The release was then delayed two weeks while it was finalised. It appears that many developers were not happy with the way this was handled and have consequently left the project.

Writing on her blog, Solis explains: "He [Reynolds] left me in charge of his 'baby' while he was on hiatus... The only problem was the 'boys'. They didn't realize the trust that the big jefe had placed in me as he handed me the keys to his 'Kingdom'. He not only handed over all the keys, but made me admin over all he had. Why couldn't they just accept his trust in me, instead of going 'behind closed doors' to plan what direction they were headed in next? It all boiled down to me stopping the release of this year's offering until 'the man' had a chance to look it over. He wasn't totally happy, and it took almost two weeks to get it in suitable shape for release. In the meantime they stomped out the door, and took a lot of people with them based on lies." The project has now started the task of "opening up to the community whereas before everything was done or controlled by a small group. Tasks are being divided up into sections, and teams are being assembled so this very thing cannot happen again (hopefully)," writes Solis.

JMiahMan, former admin of the PCLinuxOS hardware database and developer of EeePCLinuxOS, voiced his dismay at the announcement: "Not hearing from Texstar for more than a year, development [by the community] continued, then the moment before release passwords were changed on servers and suddenly Texstar is back and now not only halting the release, but saying all the hard work the community did for a year wasn't good enough. That's leadership suicide." More information is sure to come to light as former developers switch to other projects.
